May Meeting - Migration & Population In The 21st century
This meeting is to discuss the issue of migration and population in the 21st century and how this can be managed on a global scale. This meeting will be hosted by Andrew Dismore MP who is Chair of the House of Commons Select Committee on Human Rights and in that position central to this debate. June Meeting - Iraq For Sale and the Sorry State of Western Democracies Viewing of the film made with the support of 3,000 grass root donations "Iraq For Sale." It tells us a great deal about the state of democracy in the Western world. Iraq for Sale uncovers the connections between private corporations making a killing in Iraq and the decision makers who allow them to do so. July Meeting - Globalisation & Fair Trade We are holding a meeting at the House of Commons on "Globalisation & Fair Trade." As the world has faced globalisation in the last twenty years, we have seen trade and capital movements dictated by the economies of the developed countries at the expense of the developing world. This will be the subject of our July meeting that will be hosted by Malcolm Bruce MP. Malcolm is a strong advocate of Fair trade and is Chair of the influential International Development Committee and so has an important position in this debate.Harriet Lamb MD of the Fair Trade Foundation will also speak. August Meeting - Development of 21st Century Network. We thought we would use our August spot to hold a discussion on the development of 21st Century Network and how we can make it more successful. It is important to discuss this from time to time so that we reflect what people want and what concerns they have. September Meeting - Civil Society In The 21st Century We are discussing with the social network site Ammado holding a joint meeting on the role of civil society in the 21st century. We often talk of government, citizens and business but there is the whole area of non government organisations and voluntary bodies that make up a ?third sector? in societies across the globe and are having an increasingly important global impact in the present century. Ammado is the global online community of people who care. It connects nonprofits and socially engaged individuals dedicated to positive change on a global and local level. October Meeting - Human Rights In A Turbulent World We are discussing holding a joint meeting this moth in partnership with the United Nations Association, the Central London Humanists and some Universities on the topic of Human Rights. This year is the 60th anniversary of the United Nations ?Declaration of Human Rights.? And it is more important than ever to clarify what this means and how it can be made universal in the 21st Century. There has recently been many abuses of human rights across the globe including abuses by the occupying forces in Iraq and this haws raised serious question about what human rights are and how they can be observed. November Meetings - The Changing Role of Women In the 21st Century We plan to hold two meeting in November both about the changing role of women in the 21st Century. We have already got November 26th booked for a meeting in the House of Commons hosted by Theresa Villiers MP and will look at the changing role of women in the professional world. Janette Faherty, the CEO of Avanta, and one of the UK's leading private sector employment-focused training and enterprise companies will also be a speaker. We are also discussing with Enlighten Next abut another meeting that looks at the changing gender role in modern society and how we need to recontextualise these roles in our diverse and changing world. December Meeting - Child Executions In December we hope to take the issue of human rights further by focussing on the question of child executions and look at the countries that still execute minors such as the USA and Iran. What can be done to change this and what pressure can be applied to these governments to put a stop to this awful practice? |
